
Brown Hornbill Anorrhinus tickelli
Etymology:
- Anorrhinus : Greek word ano- on the upper side, above; rhinos – nose, nostrils.
- Tickelli: Ornithologist Samuel Richard Tickell (1811–1875) British Army in India.
Distribution in India: Resident in North East India.
Description: Size of 60–65 cm; weight of male 854–912 g, weight of female 683–797 g. it is a medium-sized hornbill, red-brown below, darker brown above. The male has brighter rufous cheeks and throat, pale yellow bill. The Female darker below, with dusky brown bill. The juvenile of both sexes resembles adult male, but paler brown.
Habitat: It is found in evergreen and deciduous hill forest, especially areas of taller and denser trees. It is found from foothills to 1500 m.
Food habits: It eats fruits.
Breeding habits: They breed in Feb–Apr in Myanmar. They breed co-operatively, in groups. The nest in natural cavity in tree at. 8–10 adults present at one nest; The males bring food to female inside the nest incubating the eggs.
